Untitled – Maria Taniguchi

Acrylic on Canvas
16 ft H x 9 ft W

Maria Taniguchi builds her Untitled painting through a slow, deliberate process of hand-painting small, brick-like rectangles in grayscale. She removes titles to avoid directing interpretation, pushing viewers to focus on the repetitive act of making. Her grid-like surface evokes architecture, labor, and time, turning the painting into both a visual object and a quiet record of process and persistence.

About the Artist:

Maria Taniguchi (b. 1981, Dumaguete) creates large-scale “brick paintings” that define her as a leading contemporary Filipino artist. Since 2008, she has filled each canvas with hand-painted, small rectangular bricks in grayscale, emphasizing time, labor, and repetition. She often lets the paintings rest on the floor, blurring the lines between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Taniguchi also explores video, installation, ceramics, and sculpture, using these mediums to examine materiality, space, and cultural memory.
