Exoskeleton – Nicole Coson

Nicole Coson created Exoskeleton as part of her compelling series of large-scale monotype prints that actively examine visibility, concealment, and the fragility of boundaries. She used Venetian blinds as both subject and printing tool, carefully applying oil-based ink to each slat and pressing them onto canvas to produce rhythmic, horizontal impressions. Through this process, Coson challenges viewers to rethink the constructs that separate interior from exterior, self from other, and safety from vulnerability. By foregrounding these underlying structures, she blurs the boundaries between painting and sculpture, offering a tactile exploration of the delicate membranes that shape our physical and psychological spaces.

About the Artist:

Nicole Coson, a Filipino artist born in 1992 in Manila and currently based in London, employs a multidisciplinary approach that integrates painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. She explores themes of visibility, disappearance, and the interplay between presence and absence. By using everyday objects—like Styrofoam mesh fruit casings and plastic shipping crates—she transforms them into symbols that reflect on material culture, migration, and the global food supply chain. Through her work, Coson invites viewers to reconsider the familiar and find meaning in the overlooked aspects of daily life. Her innovative use of materials and forms creates environments that blend the anonymous with the deeply personal, exploring memory, nostalgia, and identity.
